Speed gain for the vessel

The adaptation of newer technologies in the marine industry is not so common unless the technology yields significant outcomes. Since the marine industry is now changing its phase to more digitally dependent/enhanced to reduce the operational cost and increase economic growth. The introduction of Data analytics in the vessel performance equation had become a remarkable breakthrough in deciding the parameters that in turn drives the performance overall. Data-driven decision making will secure added profit while optimizing the fleet operation.

Data gathered from the vessel is very crucial in performance monitoring and further analysis. Noon data reporting is the traditional way of collecting the vessel data to the shore and sending for accessing the vessel performance measurement. The quality and integrity of the data and in-turn performance measurement have become so important nowadays as the ship owners and managers around the world are becoming quite enthusiastic to yield better results.

The performance measurement is carried out in determining Speed loss/ Fuel Saving/ Fuel Loss of the vessel which are driven by parameters like Wind, Weather, Sea state, Trim, Draft, etc. The real question arises how this quantifiable data is captured and how reliable is the output? Consider Fuel Consumption, for example, Trim, Draft, and environmental parameters are directly driving the high and low state of fuel consumption. The data is gathered on daily basis for the noon report and the average of this report decides the performance graph. The noon report data is significant as the most commonly used reporting tool. However, the technology in the marine sector is becoming advanced so that the data gathering and sending for analysis are far replaced without much human interference.

Automated frequent data collected using several sensors equipped onboard is one of these advancements. The data thus gathered is delivered to the shore where it is processed.

In the noon report, the percentage of error occurrence is quite high as the whole process is manually maneuverer. However, the dependency of noon reports still predominantly exists and Even in the current scenarios, this traditional approach is widely popular. Automated frequent data allows a more detailed and precise analysis than the noon reports due to the reduction of human error by minimizing the manual inputs.

When analyzing parameters like the weather which has high uncertainty relying completely on the noon report will affect the quality of performance measurement. Automated frequent data will increase the reliability in such scenarios. The availability of high-frequency data allows for better analysis and more accuracy.

Let’s interpret with numbers, If we take the 3 months vessel data for performance measurement from noon report and automated frequent data it would be evident that after deducting the errors and outlier only 45 -50 good quality data points will be available from noon report. Whereas automated frequent data that fetch the data continuously in every 15minutes will provide around 5000 good quality data for performance analysis.

We XShip is completely equipped to give quality results. XShip is now an industry leader in processing and analyzing vessel performance. No matter the data is generated by the noon report or the automated systems onboard, XShip verifies the data in its two-stage verification and the previous data consistency checking process delivers the efficient output the decision-makers can rely on with trust.
